SUMMARY:

This study addresses the forms of violences that journalists from Natal suffer in the exercise of their profession. Violence has always crossed women’s destiny. Gender, race and class can be determinants for personal and professional survival of journalists, an to obtain the job positions. Their bodies, narratives and existences have been in constant risk. Seen as the “Other” (BEAUVOIR, 1980), in other words a strange and indifferent person, women still need to keep fighting for a place in society. In professional exercise, these violences are not different. In Journalism, women’s roles since their arrival at newsrooms were secondary, reinforcing beliefs that the feminine duty was to care for others (BUITONI, 1990). However, even over the decades, being a woman in a newsroom is a risk to life and psychological well-being of journalists, how research finds Federação Nacional dos Jornalistas (2020), Gênero e Número Agency (2017) and Repórteres Sem Fronteiras (2021). To comprehend how violence crosses the lives of these journalists from Natal, we used feminist and intersectional feminism studies from Saffioti (2015), Davis (2016), Akotirene (2018), Hooks (2019), as well as other materials that discuss the sexual division of labour and how that phenomenon is connected to journalism routines. And to answer the guiding questions of this study, we used the life stories method (MARTINEZ, 2015), to comprehend the sensible, humane, affective and to allow that narratives that were once silenced to be finally heard. Audre Lord (2020) affirms that to break silences and understand feelings is to allow us to be fertile fields of ideas. So, we define as narratives of (re)existence the process in which women transform situations of violence into tools to keep withstanding and fighting sexism, racism and patriarchy within work environments, family units and in society in general.
