SUMMARY:

In recent years, the film industry has brought greater black representation in its productions. This growth is mainly justified by the struggle of the black movements and the profit strategy of the studios in obtaining potential consumers from the rise of this ethnic-racial group. Within this context, the approach of the film Black Panther (2018) and its character Erik Killmonger, who will be the analysis reference of this research, is justified due to its complex construction. Construction that leads us to reflect on themes such as black masculinities, racism, identity and black diasporas. Therefore, the objective of this work is to identify, through film analysis, the aspects that make Erik Killmonger a complex character in the face of stereotypes about black masculinity widespread in Hollywood. For this, there will be a brief introduction to the film, a presentation of some moments representing the black man in Hollywood productions and, finally, the analysis of the character. Through this research, we seek to demonstrate that characters such as Erik Killmonger break with the frequent stereotype of the black man widespread in Hollywood. As theoretical support, we will use the conceptions of Homi Bhaba (1998), Stuart Hall (2016), Joseph Campbell (1997), Christopher Vogler (2015) and Sílvio Anaz (2020), about archetypes and stereotypes; to Fanon (2008), hooks (2019) and Collins (2004); Afrofuturism, from the perspective of authors Freitas and Messias (2018) and Yaszek (2006); Racism based on the reflections of Almeida (2019) and on identity will be based on texts by Kilomba (2019) and Hall (2006).
