Despite living all my life in Natal, capital of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, there are territories that I have never been. Mãe Luiza was one of them. Stigmatized as barbaric and violent by the local media, its population resists frequent attempts to expel its residents and other social problems present in all major urban centers. However, this research, unlike the vast majority, does not aim to turn its eyes to such, but rather to a different look, a new perspective of its residents. More precisely, young people, who according to Jesus Martín-Barbero (2017) are the key to understanding all the changes of society. However, as a white, cisgender, and middle-class man, I prefer to follow though participatory methods. As Vítor Sérgio Ferreira explains: it was necessary to rejuvenate the methods, make them attractive. It was then that the research combined two methods: Photovoice (Wang and Burris, 2006) and Café com Bolo, its own methodology, for understanding their dynamics. We highlight that this research is the result of an action research and that it relies on the teachings of the Brazilian pedagogue Paulo Freire and his Pedagogy of the Oppressed (2008). The result presents young people beyond the stigma of the barbarian and violent, hyperconnected and confronting the whole idea of taboos imposed by society, and with high power of engagement and class consciousness.
