SUMMARY:

The research articulates photographic artistic practice to reflective text made from a selection of photographic works by artists influenced by motherhood, such as Ana Casas Broda, Ana Álvarez-Errecalde, Annegret Soltau, Malu Teodoro and Priscilla Buhr, and by the condition of the mother-body, both theirs and mine. At first I select a few works by each artist and during the dissertation I will present some personal works, this part still under construction. Throughout the text, a question is asked and for it, only, an answer is sought: "how motherhood crosses the photographic production of contemporary women artists, including my own?". Motherhood is understood as a social institution (RICH, 2019) and a cultural performance (STEVENS, 2007). Photography is understood as a media, a mediation process that is part of a texture of experience (SILVERSTONE, 2002), and as a language (HALL, 2016), by enabling the expression of meanings and the communication of ideas and thoughts. The research approaches the concept of Transverse photography (NAVAS, 2017), which indicates a current condition of the photographic image in which there is a possibility of hybridization with contemporary art. Art is understood as an instrument and space capable of providing the opening of a new world (CAUQUELIN, 2005) and also a type of knowledge and place in which one can think about things that are not thinkable elsewhere (CAMNITZER, 2012). Furthermore, art still figures as a problematization practice through which signs are deciphered and new meanings produced (ROLNIK, 2002). Works by contemporary artists are analyzed from the perspective of motherhood and personal works are articulated to the reflective text throughout the research.
