SUMMARY:

The free trade fair represents one of the oldest forms of commercialization of diverse products in the urban scene, this practice still plays important roles, be they economic, social or cultural. In the face of this conjuncture, this dissertation problematizes the communication processes that permeate the social and cultural relations of the free fair phenomenon in contemporaneity. This scientific research has as main objective to investigate the communicational processes existing between pedlars and customers at the Central Fair of Campina Grande (PB), in the context of Folkcommunication and Epistemologies of the South. For this, we also seek to characterize the free fair, analyze the consumption rituals and the polysemy of popular culture manifestations present. The theoretical contribution is based on the Folkcommunication Theory (BELTRÃO 1980 and 2014; MARQUES DE MELO, 2008; TRIGUEIRO, 2008), in the studies of the Epistemologies of the South (SANTOS 2019 and 2013), in the studies on free trade fair (SATO, 2012; BRANDÃO, 2017; DETONI, 2020; RESENDE, 2020) and on the Central Fair (ARAÚJO, 2011; PEREGRINO, 2018; FREIRE, 2019; SILVA, 2020). As a research method we used Symbolic Cartography based on SANTOS (2000), regarding the approach, objectives and technical procedures, the types of research corresponded respectively to the following modalities: qualitative, exploratory, bibliographic and field research. The research is justified due to the communicational and socio-cultural character of the free fair, because the strength of the popular tradition lives in the corners of the fair, in the visual and oral narratives and in the sociability processes proper to the researched environment. As historical and cultural relevance, we point out that since 2017 the fair investigated is Intangible Cultural Heritage of Brazil, registered by the National Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN). Of a total of 5,119 existing in Brazil only two occupy the category of registered goods: the Central Fair of Campina Grande (PB) and the Fair of Caruaru (PE). As partial results we pointed out the adequacy of the theoretical-methodological framework used to the phenomenon investigated, by means of the currents and concepts adopted it is possible to generate subsidies to think the fair as na integrated element in the valorization of the diversity of knowledge, thus it can be considered a plural instance of knowledge. And we also point out that in the communication between peddlers and customers we identify expressions proper to the language of “mei de feira” example we can highlight the following lines: “Pode chegar, vamo chegando freguesa”, “Moça bonita não paga, mas também não leva” and “Eita Dona Maria abaixei e não levanto mais”.
