SUMMARY:

The Rio Grande do Norte state, in the Northeast of Brazil, concentrates 95% of the country’s salt production. This secular activity moves the economy, politics and society of the so-called Costa Branca region, in the semi-arid region of the state. However, studies by environmental  protection agencies indicate a series of environmental damages caused by the presence of salt piles in preservation areas ( called by its portuguese acronym APPs). This research consists of qualiquantitative analysis of the coverage about the action of the Federal Prosecution Office in Rio Grande do Norte (MPF/RN) in favor of the removal of salt piles from preservation areas in 2019 by blogs, portals and news agencies. It includes measuring the space dedicated to the theme and how it was addressed. It also seeks to understand how the positioning expressed by MPF/RN was portrayed by the media and which voices were given greater prominence. To this end, the main concepts of the sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, about social structures and power disputes, were applied to the Content Analysis methodology, with emphasis on the social fields involved and their agents and institutions. The study shows that the digital vehicles had, for the most part, a passive posture and had a high rate of repetition of the contents disseminated by MPF/RN's press office. Thus, the intersection between the environmental, scientific and judicial fields - represented mainly by MPF/RN - prevailed, in the analyzed coverage, over the discourse coming from the economic field (which was supported by the political field).
