SUMMARY:

We carried out a case study on the professional conduct of photojournalists, in the light of the rights and ethical precepts involved in conflicts, in the prison units Complexo Penal Anísio Jobim (AM) and Peniteciária Estadual de Alcaçuz (RN), which took place in January 2017. We contextualize the two cases studied (AM and RN) and we reflect starting from codes, laws and conducts that involve the photojournalist's profession. We propose a contribution to the deontology of photojournalism, based on the analysis of ethical questions and rights involving the press, the prison population and their familiars. In data collection, we interviewed six photojournalists and a journalist in order to structure enough material to understand the professionals conduct. Methodologically we based on the descriptive case study (GIL, 2008) and as a result we perceive the evidence of photojournalistic practices that are both violating rights, as well as concerned with the image and exposure of others. In view of this, we observe the absence of the State in maintaining the rights of the deprived of liberty and their respective images. We infer that contemporaneity provokes us to think about new ways of professional performance in the media, in which ethics and basic rights must be guaranteed to maintain human dignity.
