SUMMARY:

This research has as its theme the convergence between two axes: communication and power. Inserted in the field of media studies, the investigation seeks to reiterate the argument that power relations are built in the mind from communication processes, and that, therefore, psychic strategies are more effective than tactics of force and inhibition. This means that in addition to the hard power and the soft power, (NYE, 2004; 2012), based on repression and intimidation, respectively, we are facing new agencies of domination, marked by smart power (idem), an instance of power that operates through sophisticated seduction strategies, through media technologies. While hard power rules “disciplinary society” (FOUCAULT, 1979), acting from the repressive apparatus and, supported by commercial and industrial capitalism, uses force to maintain order; and soft power leads to a “control society” (DELEUZE, 2010), acting through ideological devices and, supported by financial capitalism, uses norms and rules to monitor, control and punish; intelligent power has guided a type of society that does not seem to fit into repressive and inhibiting contexts. Through media devices and, taken by “informational capitalism” (CASTELLS, 1999) and its modulations - “data capitalism” (BENTES, 2018), “platform” (SRNICEK, 2017) and “surveillance” (ZUBOFF, 2015; 2019) - smart power uses seduction to attract, persuade and act on behavior change. In this sense, we will seek to understand, from Facebook, how these new relations between communication and power are being structured by informational capitalism. We started from four hypotheses, that is, it is possible that informational capitalism is acting in order to generate: a) more communication, therefore, more power; b) more communication, however, less power; c) less communication, therefore, less power; d) less communication, however, more power. So far, the research points to the fourth hypothesis, revealing that informational capitalism has contributed to the increase of information and automation, as well as to the reduction of communication and autonomy. Therefore, in order to prove this hypothesis, we use cartography as a methodology, as it recognizes the rhizomatic aspect of the object (DELEUZE & GUATTARI, 1997; SANTOS, 1988; ROLNIK, 2007; VENTURINI, 2010; KASTRUP, 2007; KIRST, GIACOMEL , RIBEIRO, COSTA & ANDREOLI, 2003).
