SUMMARY:

This research aims to identify and analyze a profile of open television in Rio Grande do Norte. Let us gather information on the general characteristics of local broadcasters and answer the key question: what are the categories and genres present in potiguar television programs? Rio Grande do Norte currently has 12 broadcasters operating on an open channel. As an empirical object, we will have the first five TV stations installed in the state and which concentrate the largest number of viewers: University TV, Ponta Negra TV, Cabugi TV, Tropical TV and Band RN. To achieve the research objective, we will rely on Williams (2016), Jost (2004) and Bourdieu (1997) concepts of television, with contributions from Machado (2000), Rezende (2000) and Mattos (1990) to understand the trajectory of TV in Brazil, Lima (2010, 2001, 2000) on regional media and Kneipp (2017) on TV in Rio Grande do Norte, as well as studies by Duarte and Castro (2007) and Aronchi de Souza (2004) on television genres and formats. In the methodology, we will apply Content Analysis (BARDIN, 2011), associated to methods and techniques of data collection of the current programming, considering that we intend to have as a final result a television profile in Rio Grande do Norte with descriptive aspects, critical and analytical.
