RESUMO:

This thesis aims to investigate the structures, values and practices characteristic of contemporary childhood from their experiences with social networking sites. The assumption of a childhood, in its homogeneity and heterogeneity, which sees in information and communication technologies the opportunity to build identities, power relations and media literacies, produced from the interlocution between its own agency and the relations and rules legitimized and reproduced over space and time, is defended. Thus, it is understood that childhood goes through a process of reconfiguration based on networking sociability and visibility contexts, supported by consumption logic that it is historically perpetuated. Under a constructivist-structuralist ontology, the theoretical-methodological framework presents the Childhood Studies as predominant, represented mainly by the New Sociology of Childhood. (PROUT; JAMES, 1997; SARMENTO, 2008, 2013; SARMENTO; PINTO, 1997; CORSARO, 2011); and the studies of mediations and mediatizations under the understandings of Mediation Theory (MARTÍN-BARBERO, 2009) and the media bios (SODRÉ, 2013). The analisis are based on the application of focus groups in two schools in the city of Natal, between 10 to 12 year old children, students of the public and private education system. The qualitative stage is complemented by the interpretation of quantitative data produced and made available by Cetic.br regarding the situations of consumption of information and communication technologies in Brazil. Preliminary findings indicate the following paths: (1) among children, social classes are more associated with digital barriers in physical and motivational access, and gender differences are more visible in the forms of actual / stated use of ICT, but in general, the practices and meanings produced are more linked to the sphere of ludic culture, audiovisual culture and contact with peers, indicating a possible homogenizing element; and (2) most skills and activities focus on sociability and entertainment, while educational resources available are kept untapped. In addition, it is identified (3) the transformation of ludic and audiovisual culture into cultural, social and economic capitals (BOURDIEU, 1986), used by children who seek a place of social notability, that is, to be noticed as celebrities in the network, as peer group leaders or as media professionals; (4) the consumer impulse that permeates the network relations, seen by concerns with the image, the number of followers and likes and the possession of a smartphone with specific brand; and (5) the reconfiguration of the concept of media, which, in the view of some children, seems to be constructed and viewed from the characteristics of social networking sites: possibility of interaction, release of the emission pole and visibility and reciprocity logics.
