RESUMO:

The current technological context enables diverse actors, in groups or individually, to produce
and distribute content, with the potential to become relevant, due to the popularization of
information and communication technologies (ICTs), especially the internet and social
networks’ websites and applications. This situation reconfigures the predominant character of
the journalistic field as responsible for the construction of social reality and the ways to
undertake actions of social contestation through activism, conformed by the permanent
updating of media devices, enabling the emergence of media activists who produce counter
hegemonic discourses, giving new contours to the understanding of alternative media. In this
sense, this research aims to analyze the discursive production of two of these groups, the
Mídia Ninja and the Jornalistas Livres, during the election process for the presidency of
Brazil, in 2018, in order to: describe the strategies used by them with regard to the choice of
language, content formats and narratives to convince internet users about their political
positions and to establish themselves as references of a political current amid the torrent of
information that circulated in the mentioned period; problematize the media activist action of
the collectives and deepen the discussions about the qualitative increase or not of political
participation in the context of digital networks. For this, we will use Textually Oriented
Discourse Analysis, based on the three-dimensional conception of discourse (text, discursive
production and social practice) (FAIRCLOUGH, 2001) in dialogue with Critical Discourse
Analysis (CDA) (FAIRCLOUGH, 2002, 2013; MEYER , 2002) to analyze the 30 posts from
each group with most engagement (60 in all). The theoretical network that underpins the study
goes through the questions regarding the reticularization of society, mediatization and what it
means for the improvement of democracy, the aspects related to alternative media,
cyberactivism, net-activism, media activism and free media and their relationship with
journalism. The ongoing research has as partial results the observation that the groups carried
out attacks against the then candidate Jair Bolsonaro, using humor, memes and art (the
aesthetic field) in audiovisual content, with superficial contextualization, which clearly puts
them in one side of the dispute (which supported candidate Fernando Haddad), but also risks
the credibility of the collectives for the lack of deepening in the issues raised in the posts.
Moreover, few categories of what is meant by media activism were used: there was no
coverage of manifestations, no physical presence to provide connection between the street and
the online environment, which can put the groups as common “posters” on network sites that
only indiscriminately feed the political polarization in Brazil.
