SUMMARY:

Due to the scenario of greater concentration of economic activities in its capital and an industrial productive structure dominated mainly by a few sectors, leading to the concept of “hollow productive structure”, this dissertation seeks to carry out descriptive research, based on a bibliographic review, on the process of economic formation in the state of Rio de Janeiro, with an emphasis on its capital, seeking to highlight the historical conditions for the formation of its urban and productive space. The analysis of this object seeks to make connections and inferences about the theoretical perspectives that the regional economy embraces, especially from the relationship between the concepts of space and economics, associated with the historical reality of Rio de Janeiro. So far it has been possible to observe that the formation of the urban space in Rio de Janeiro was inserted within the mercantilist logic, in which issues related to transport logistics and commercial routes, especially maritime ones, interfered in the locality and in the pattern of occupation of the territory, but, in addition, it was possible to evidence social, class, political and mainly productive implications for the internal spatial dynamics, which made possible the accumulation of capital necessary for the formation of capitalism in the central economies. The formation of elites and their relationship with the public authorities, the fruit of the transition from mercantilism to capitalism, is one of the conditions that marked the pattern of appropriation of urban and productive space in Rio de Janeiro so that structural inequalities are they will outline both in the scope of the labor market, housing conditions and sociability of its population, as well as in the primacy of the state capital over other municipalities, derived from its commercial function and political centrality.
