SUMMARY:

To reflect on the problem of deindustrialization is to understand the importance of the sector in the development trajectory of the world's major economies. Failure in the successful industrialization process of subsectors has a strong link with negative structural change. This type of change is the very product of the failure of the economy in the face of the emergence of a service sector with low dynamism. The sectorally disaggregated analysis of deindustrialization demonstrates the differences that exist within the manufacturing sector that influence its ability to contribute to the growth and development of countries. That said, the aggregate approach of the manufacturing sector fails to reflect heterogeneity and the different growth trajectories and reduction in the relative participation of the sector, as some subsectors may be deindustrializing while others are industrializing. The Brazilian manufacturing industry has been deindustrializing early since the 1980s in technology-intensive subsectors. In particular, some subsectors may be negatively impacted by China's recent rise in internationaltrade. From this perspective, the present work aims to analyze the process of Brazilian subsectoral deindustrialization from the perspective of foreign trade, more specifically by analyzing the relative participation of the variables employment, in the relative participation of the manufacturing added value in GDP, of manufacturing employment in the total economy, relative participation of the sector in international trade and what are the external and internal aspects of the Brazil-China trade relationship. The hypothesis that there is a reduction in aggregate participation in the Brazilian manufacturing sector, is displeased, especially in the subsectors with higher technological content aggravated by the recent increase in competition with China in the foreign and domestic markets. The justification of this work is based on the importance that the manufacturing sector has in the world for strengthening and regional and national development, and because there are few studies that deal with deindustrialization from the perspective of international trade through subsectoral analysis. As an empirical strategy, we analyzed the evolution in the participation of the variables employment, added value, international trade and the pattern of competition of Brazil with China in third markets, for the years 1950-2017, aiming to evaluate the causes and consequences resulting from the deindustrialization process. To this end, it has been characterized by a methodology that is characterized as exploratory with a statistical focus that allows a description of both quantitative and qualitative. It is expected that the results of this study indicate that there is a process of deindustrialization in Brazil in the subsectors of higher technological intensity, serving as a help in the production and planning of industrial policies, with the objective of mitigating the effects of deindustrialization in the country.
