SUMMARY:

The present dissertation had as general objective to analyze the productive structure of the Brazilian regions and the determinants of the inter-municipal income inequalities in Brazil. Both themes in the light of the theory of regional economics. The research data are of a secondary nature and as a methodological procedure the shift-share method was used to analyze the regional productive structure and spatial econometrics techniques to analyze the intermunicipal income inequality in Brazil. The time frame is equivalent to the years 2000 to 2017. The results show that sectors such as trade and services generated more jobs in the period of crisis to the detriment of the sectors of industry and civil construction that have negative impacts on the labor market, whereas the agricultural sector demonstrated strong seasonality in all periods of analysis. With regard to intermunicipal income inequality, there was a great regional difference where the Low-Low clusters prevail in the North and Northeast regions, while the High-High clusters are largely located in the Center-South of the country. By the econometric exercise, it was diagnosed by the Hausman and Lagrange Multiplier tests that the most suitable model was the Spatial Panel Fixed Effects Lag Model. The results showed that Gini indicators, infant mortality rate, infrastructure, population density and GDP per capita in a municipality positively and directly impact the increase in income differences in that same municipality and indirectly in the income differentials of neighboring municipalities. When the total effect of the other variables is analyzed, the opposite is observed. An increase of 1% in the average education indicator and a greater supply of electricity generate a total positive effect with regard to the reduction of social, regional and income inequalities, both in the municipality in question and in its neighbors, causing a reduction in income differences.
