This dissertation seeks to analyze the evolution of international trade in Brazil and the Northeast region, highlighting the possible impacts on the employment and the profile of the jobs created, and pointing out the differences between exporting and non-exporting establishments in the period 2003 to 2014. It is understood that the international insertion is a fundamental piece for the development of a country or region. In the 21st century, Brazil achieved a greater insertion in international trade, materialized by the increase of the share of exports in GDP. As far as the Northeast region is concerned, this can not be affirmed. Its economic formation, since the eighteenth century, has conditioned a productive structure that did not directly favor its relationship with the external sector, and it could be divided into three stages: consolidation of the Northeastern complex, commercial articulation and productive integration. The good performance of public and private investments in Brazil in the 21st century contributed to the positive performance of the Northeastern GDP. The region enlarges its share in the national GDP, although in terms of extern sector this has not occurred in a similar way. The economic dynamics observed in Brazil and Northeast had a different impact on employment and income in exporting and non - exporting establishments, focus of this dissertation. To do that, the identification of the establishments that exported during the period of the analysis came from the disclosure made by the Foreign Trade Secretariat (SECEX). For the analysis of employment and income, the information came from the data available in the Annual Social Information Report (RAIS). This dissertation is divided in three chapters. The first seeks to relate the economic formation of the Northeast from the eighteenth century to the period after 2000, emphasizing the dynamics of foreign trade. The second chapter presents the results of the evolution and participation in the employment of the establishments according to export condition. Finally, in the last chapter, the analysis turns to income. In addition to the growth of formal employment, it will be sought to explore the employment profile in salary terms by highlighting the differences between the different establishments in order to contribute to the enrichment of the analysis of the contribution of international trade to the formal labor market in Brazil and the Northeast.
