SUMMARY:

Introduction: Menopause marks the end of a woman's reproductive period and occurs on average between the ages of 48 and 52. It can be classified as premature if it happens before the age of 40, early before the age of 45 and late after the age of 55. Previous studies have suggested that premature or early menopause is associated with worse functional outcomes in postmenopausal women, but conflicting results have been reported. Objective: This study aims to investigate the association of age at menopause and the functionality of older women based on data from the National Health Survey of 2013. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study with a sample of 5148 women aged 60 years and older. Participants were classified according to age at menopause (<40 years, between 40 and 44 years, 45 and 49 years, 50 and 54 years and 55 years or older) and the presence of difficulty in performing Basic Activities of Daily Living (BADLs) (eat, taking a shower, lie down and get up, sit and get up, using the toilet, dressing and walking) and the Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs) (shopping, managing finances, taking medication, going to the doctor and going out alone). Participants were also evaluated regarding socioeconomic characteristics, lifestyle habits, presence of chronic diseases and depressive symptoms. The relationship between age at menopause, the presence of difficulty in ADLs and the other study variables were analyzed using the chi-square test, considering p<0.05. Results: Women with menopause before the age of 40 years had a higher prevalence of difficulty for both BADLs (26.2%) and IADLs (50.1%) than the other groups (14.7 to 17.5% for BADLs and 30 .2 to 34.9% for IADLs, p<0.001). Age at premature and early menopause was also statistically associated with a higher prevalence of smoking (p=0.003) and premature menopause associated with a higher prevalence of chronic renal failure (p= 0.030). The higher prevalence of difficulty in IADLs and BADLs was also statistically associated with a higher percentage of alcohol consumption (p<0.001) and of those who had never used hormone replacement therapy (p=0.001). Conclusion: It is expected that the results of the present study can provide information at the national level on the association of the functionality of older women with the age at menopause, contributing to the planning and health promotion of the female population.
