Muscle Strength, Sarcopenia, Aging.
Background: hospitalization is a critical event which profoundly affects health and functionality in the elderly. Physical performance mensures are useful tools for functional decline assessment after adverse events such as hospital admission. The grip strength evaluation is na affective and simple measure to estimate in clinical practice and rehabilitation the deleteriuos effects of hospitalization. Aim: to evaluate the effects of hospitalization on grip strength in elderly hospitalized in an university hospital. Methods: an observational cohort-type was carried out at the University Hospital Onofre Lopes (HUOL), Natal-RN. The sample consisted of 1070 elderly people Who were hospitalized during the period of January 2014 to April 2015. Testo of cognitive ability (Leganés Cognitive Test), functionality test (Katz Index and Lawton Scale) and physical performance (grip strength and gait speed) were applied at admission discharge as well as information on the state of the health and functionality prior to hospitalization. Partial results: Significant differences were observed in mean of elderly men and women between the time of admission and hospital discharge.
