SUMMARY:

This text will present the initial results of the research in two moments. In Chapter I, I will review the uses of the concept of cultural industry and the problematic nature of intellectuals. In Chapter II, I will present a historical reconstruction of the social, cultural, and political trajectory of the "pop philosophers" Mário Sergio Cortella, Leandro Karnal, Clovis de Barros Filho, and Luiz Felipe Pondé. In this sense, I will seek to elucidate and describe the connections between the social genesis, structure, and social functions of the production and performance of these actors in the spaces of the cultural industry and the public sphere of contemporary Brazil. By selecting a restricted corpus consisting of the five best-selling books and three interventions in the public sphere (2016 and 2019), I will work, from the perspective of an immanent critique, with the hypothesis that the rise of these actors occurred through two processes. First, there was the construction of a persuasive script inspired by new justifications of capitalism, which resulted in successful investments in corporate education and philosophical counseling. Next, a convincing civic moderation performance was constructed in the context of the drama of progressive versus reactionary movements of the 2010s.
