SUMMARY:

Much of the literature on productive backyards in Brazil highlights their transformative and pedagogical potential in women's lives: food security, increased income, knowledge, intergenerational relationships, in short, dimensions and potentialities that tend to strengthen autonomy and its Protagonism. When the articles bring photos of the analyzed experiences, we observe that the majority of women are black, however, the racial dimension in this literature is almost non-existent, except when it comes to quilombola backyards. The strong presence of black people in rural areas was demonstrated by the 2017 Agricultural Census, which revealed 2.6 million black farmers, for 2.2 million white. The objective of this work is to analyze how race composes the dimensions of productive backyards. Through the lenses of decoloniality and intersectionality, we will use a qualitative method that includes face-to-face and semi-structured interviews. We believe that race and racism are part of the narratives and trajectories of these women and, while experiencing specific experiences in caring for backyards, they are one of the main groups to protect and preserve the dimensions that emerge from their experiences in managing backyards productive.
