AREA: Sociologia
SUMMARY:

After numerous statements from former employees of Facebook Ink, now known as Meta, investigations into this company and evidence of its participation in the United States presidential election campaign in 2016, it has become clear that the unregulated use of data for this purpose constitutes one of the greatest threats to the democratic political process since its establishment. Numerous academic researches have been conducted in order to elucidate this process, which was repeated in other countries around the world, bypassing legal rules and leading to a series of events of dubious interpretation, but little has yet been clarified about whether and how the use of data, through Big Data platforms, were used for the purpose of influencing the electoral process of the 2022 presidential campaign. Therefore, the present research seeks to answer: how Big Techs can interfere in the democratic processes by using Big Data in the communicational development of electoral campaigns in the world, more specifically the 2022 presidential electoral campaign in Brazil? The objective of this research is to identify if and how Big Data was used to influence the electoral process of the 2022 presidential campaign in Brazil. Regarding the Methodology, the corpus of the research will be composed by the analysis of two cases that marked the 2022 presidential electoral campaign: 1) the political use of Brazil's Independence Day, September 07, 2022; 2) the invasion of the official government buildings in Brasilia, on January 8, 2023. For this, the methodological approach of research adopted, as it is a research within the scope of Communication, will consist of analyzing these events from the Metáporo method, by Ciro Marcondes Filho, created to "accompany the dynamics, versatility and continuous mutability" of this area, which also implies in the definitions of Communicational Event and Continuous Atmospheric Media, by the same author. The study will be made based on these events and on their unfolding on the behavior of the population/electors registered in stories published on the UOL portal from June 2022 to February 2023, represented visually through the use of graphs. The expected result of this research is to understand how the use of Big Data in the communicational development of the 2022 presidential election in Brazil may have influenced the 2022 presidential election process in Brazil, interfering in the freedom of choice of individuals regarding their political representatives.
