The phenomenon of democratic recession has gained more and more space in the Social Sciences research agenda due to the complexity and conveniences that such an event has acquired in the last decade. In understanding it, the dimensions of representation and rationality of political institutions have almost always been discussed. The scenario of contemporary politics, however, poses new challenges for social scientists, now, above all, with the emergence of the extreme right and the realization of the political movement of feelings and affections that circulate in society. Considering a current need for developments in the analysis of the phenomenon of politics in its forms of relationality with affective practices, we seek to revisit the literature on the theory of affects and then the political writings of Émile Durkheim in order to develop an examination of the modes of contribution of the French sociologist to understand the relationship between politics and affections. For that, as a methodological strategy, we used the conceptual analytical method of reconstruction from the emphasis on a certain aspect of Durkheim's work in which we find the affective categories; along with this there is also a rational-normative reconstruction to apprehend the affective structures and how they are configured within the institutions of democratic societies. This is expected to produce a starting point for thinking about the democratic societies of our time based on a new understanding of the relationship between politics and affections.
