SUMMARY:

This paper aims to show the paths of a research currently in progress, as well as to guide the procedures to be done by 2023. Our field of investigation consists of the practices adopted to teach music in social projects, using a sociological perspective which understands that studying music also leads to learning different worldviews. Therefore, music teaching is ultimately related to the cultural processes present in interactions that occur between people and their community. As locus of the study, we selected the social project Ilha de Música, which takes place in a community called África, in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Our goal is to investigate culture as a formative experience inside the community, as a way of living that is both social and global, as well as its manifestations in the activities developed in the project. As our procedure, we chose to construct Weberian ideal types, in addition to conducting a systematic literature review and a field investigation. As a procedure to guide the fieldwork, we opted for the ethnographic method. As for the theoretical discussion, we resort to works from Social Sciences, Sociology, Music Education, Sociology of Music, and Ethnomusicology, focusing on Cultural Studies, Comparative Studies, and Complexity Studies. Regarding the data treatment, we perform a comparison between the ideal types, the theoretical assumptions chosen, and the empirical data. We chose a comparison through data triangulation, since it allows our interpretation. As for the results of the empirical research, it is not possible to report them yet as the research is still in progress.
