SUMMARY:

This work is about the impacts on the health of the Social Workers of the University Hospital Lauro Wanderley during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Taking as theoretical references the writings of Karl Marx, Eva Illouz and Arlie Russell Hochschild, we propose a study on the management of EBSERH in that hospital to investigate how a certain business ethos - taken by the incorporation of institutionalized feeling rules and an intense emotional management - would operate a process of commodification of emotions harmful to the health of Social Workers, intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic. The perspective adopted here is that “affective capitalism” has produced an even more sophisticated form of alienation that is not necessarily based on the split between the worker and the object he manufactures, but between the latter and his own subjectivity. In other words: in this new system, the alienated product is a mental state, an expression of contemporary suffering.
