SUMMARY:

The meat industry has been consolidated with a growing threat to human and environmental health, as it exceeds planetary limits to guarantee intensive production of this food. Although in recent decades the increase in meat consumption has had a strong trend in emerging economies, the literature shows evidence of stagnation and reduction in high-income countries. This trend has made different diets based on the reduction or exclusion of meat to gain adherence among the world population. In the Brazilian context, part of the population claims to have reduced meat consumption in recent years for reasons unrelated to purchasing power, which indicates the emergence of a group of followers of a new diet: the flexitarians. Flexitarianism is a food model that stands out for the reduction or qualification of meat consumption. Our study aims to identify the factors that influence the reduction in meat consumption among a Brazilian flexitarian population. Adult Brazilians will participate in the survey, (i) who exclude meat from at least one meal during the week, (ii) as long as the reason for this exclusion is not economic. Thus, we will: characterize the socioeconomic profile of this population; characterize the pattern of consumption of edible meat; in addition to testing two hypotheses (i) that gender is a conditioning factor in reducing meat consumption and (ii) that the “environmental impact” motivation is the factor that best explains adherence to flexitarianism. We will use an online form containing a module with socioeconomic issues and another module with a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). We will use descriptive statistics to summarize our results. We will answer our questions that involve hypothesis testing through inferential statistics using Generalized Linear Models. All analyzes will be developed in RStudio language programming software. As a final product, we will have two articles: the first characterizing the flexitarian population in Brazil, explaining socioeconomic factors and motivations that contribute to the behavior of reducing meat consumption; and the second problem as gender issues associated with meat consumption.
