SUMMARY:

This research provides an analysis of the virtual lynching suffered by journalist Patrícia Campos Mello described in the book Máquina do Ódio, or The Hate Machine, translated into English (2020), and the cancellation of researcher Lilia Schwarcz, in August 2020. Patrícia was the victim of a lynching after disclosing, through a story in the newspaper Folha de São Paulo, a network of fake news shooting by the WhatsApp® application, during the 2018 electoral period. Schwarcz was subjected to a cancellation after issuing an opinion about the film Black is king (2020), by the singer Beyoncé, stating that the artist was wrong in “glamourising” blackness, which was a statement enough to incite attacks on the Internet. Cases of wide repercussion in the press and digital media, objects of this research, which argues that, despite differences in the denomination of the phenomena, both the virtual lynching and the cancel culture are collective practices that aim at the virtual annihilation of the other. The theoretical and methodological discussion of this paper is composed of studies on crowds by the French sociologist Gabriel Tarde; digital communication and digital swarm by the South Korean philosopher Byung-Chul Han; harassing masses by the Bulgarian writer Elias Canetti; surveillance and punishment by the French philosopher Michel Foucault; lynchings in Brazil by the Brazilian sociologist José de Souza Martins and Sociology of the Present by Edgar Morin. Primary sources, such as books, doctoral theses and master’s dissertations, as well as secondary sources, such as scientific and journalistic articles and news from Internet portals are part of the methodological framework of this paper.
