SUMMARY:

The participation of family farming in the National School Feeding Program (PNAE) depends essentially on incentives to formal organizations through cooperatives and associations, spaces that facilitate the flow of production and stimulate rural development. In this sense, this research seeks to answer whether the participation of formal family farming organizations interferes with the acquisition and quality of school meals. The main objective of this research is to evaluate the role of family farming cooperatives and associations in the supply and demand of local foods and their effectiveness in relation to the school feeding program in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. It is a quantitative study and the methodological design will be developed from three distinct and complementary stages: (1) a systematic review; (2) a cross-sectional study; and (3) a case study. In step 1, it was conducted based on the PRISMA recommendations (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyzes) and the MedLine / PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases. In step 2, questionnaires over telephone calls will be applied to 356 family farmers from 83 municipalities. Finally, in step 3, school menus, shopping lists and public calls from two municipalities will be analyzed and compared, which will be selected based on the results of the previous step. For data analysis, descriptive, bivariate and multivariate statistical analysis will be performed, applying the chi-square, Fisher's exact test and Poison regression when appropriate. The following steps include: (1) publishing the results of this research in journals in the area; (2) prepare a policybrief to be sent to the State Government and its entities related to family farming; and (3) hold a regionalized workshop with the participation of the social actors that make up the PNAE in each municipality.
