TITLE:

LITERATURE AND SOCIOLOGY IN THE WORK OF MICHEL HOUELLEBECQ

KEY WORDS:

 Literature. Malaise. Humanism.

PAGES: 50
BIG AREA: Ciências Humanas
AREA: Sociologia
SUMMARY:
This work analyzes the novelist work of the writer Michel Houellebecq, based on the premise that literature in general, and the work of the French author in particular, has epistemic dimensions (SEVÄNEN, 2018) and the potential to establish discourse (FOUCAULT, 2001) about of the malaise of contemporary civilization. Literature, like the humanities, produces discursive orientations about different realities. The question that arises is about the possibility of linking Houellebecq's text to the condition of founder of discourse on contemporary social issues, above all to the malaise of current civilization. It is a malaise linked to a crisis of what is called “humanism”, as discussed by Heidegger (2005) and, more recently, reworked by Peter Sloterdijk (2000; 2008). It is no longer a discontent resulting from the repression of a primitive man, but from the tension of the civilized individual between inhibiting and disinhibiting forces. However, the same anguish echoes with the decline of the body and with the “hell of the other” present in Freud (2010). Furthermore, it is also a crisis of fundamental institutions of modernity (BAUMAN, 2014). The main objective of this research is to analyze this contemporary malaise through the articulation between literature and sociology.
