SUMMARY:

In 2017, Hulu premiered to its subscribers the first season of the TV show The Handmaid’s Tale, an adaptation of the book of the same name by Canadian author Margaret Atwood. The plot shows us an alternative reality in which the United States suffered a political coup, becoming a theocratic totalitarian regime known as Gilead. The spectator follows in an alternate temporal narrative the story of the character June, going through his life from before the establishment of the new State, until the present moment of his plot. The series quickly won over critics and audiences by bringing a dystopian plot full of symbolism and visual elements that in a way dialogue with the current moment of sociopolitical instability faced by several countries in the world, such as Brazil, Argentina, USA, among others. The production has become part of the culture of the series, which has developed over the past few years and has been constantly fueled by new TV shows on streaming platforms, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO Go, and others. Therefore, this study seeks to identify the existence of close and possible links between the series and reality, such as the shock between the advance of the feminist struggle and the current conservative governments based on male chauvinism introjected in the culture, similar to the background context presented both in production and in the book. In addition to understanding the prominence and relevance of The Handmaid's Tale within the entertainment market, through the repercussions and awards received. For that, the feature of film analysis is necessary to capture the elements present in the transmitted content and understand its role in sharing an ideology that contradicts the growth of conservatism and fascism.
