RESUMO:
In the city operates a system of classification that hierarchizes the places, each of them, thus distinguishing them, and the inhabitants that occupy such places, so this procedure classifies disqualifying those and those who live in the peripheries and slums of the metropolis. The slum, whether in Brazil or anywhere in the world, under the multiple names it receives, is always presented as a problem that needs to be solved. This research deals with the process of social construction of the slum in the city of Natal / RN, known as the City of the Sun, based on the collective representations and moral (lay) implications presented by Durkheim, which crystallize in society. For this we have a specific case, the Step of the Motherland. It is a well-known place on the banks of the Potengi River, one of the oldest places that should receive more incentives to undergo positive changes and reforms, but receives little attention from the government. In addition, there are representations that the native population attributes negatively, which are imposed on those who live in this place. In Brazil, our object is perceived as a phenomenon only in the twentieth century, and it is from this historical period that we will make our sociological analysis of the event. From qualitative research I developed the work of analyzing the data collected through the field visit, conducting interviews and reviewing the bibliography.
