PAGES: 42
BIG AREA: Ciências Exatas e da Terra
AREA: Geociências
SUMMARY:

The occurrence and patterns of submarine slides along the continental slope and ocean basin in the offshore portion of the Brazilian Equatorial margin were investigated by interpreting a data set of mini airgun 2D post-stack seismic sections and multibeam bathymetric data. The study aimed to characterize morphological features on the continental slope, seismic facies in the architecture of the Neogene and Quaternary deposits of the continental slope, identify if it correlates to others passive margin deposits. We identified different seismic facies patterns associated to slump complexes (mass transport sediments). Seismic facies A represented by discontinuous reflectors varying from distorted to chaotic configuration, seismic facies B comprises discontinuous reflectors tending to chaotic pattern. Seismic facies C comprises subparallel reflectors with high amplitude and lateral continuity. Seismic facies D shows parallel to subparallel, low-amplitude, discontinuous reflectors, appearing predominantly transparent in lens geometry. Seismic facies E is characterized by discontinuous subparallel reflectors of medium to high amplitude and variable frequency. Seismic facies F comprises parallel to subparallel reflectors with predominantly mid amplitude, but high amplitude reflectors. Seismic facies G is characterized by parallel to subparallel reflectors exhibiting mid to low amplitude and low lateral continuity. Chaotic seismic reflectors occur mainly along slope region in all seismic sections while a configuration of subparallel disrupted reflectors occur in ocean basin. The occurrence of submarine channels extending from slope towards ocean basin is confirmed by seismic data and bathymetric data. Based on data analysis, we suggest oversteepening of the continental slope, seismicity, and tectonic as triggers for the occurrence of submarine slides for our study area.
