A NEW ICHNOSITE WITH SAUROPOD TRACKS FROM THE LOWER CRETACEOUS, SOUSA FORMATION, RIO DO PEIXE BASIN, PARAÍBA STATE, NORTHEAST BRAZIL

SUMMARY:

South America has an extensive ichnological record of sauropod dinosaurs. In Brazil, there are records in several locations but the Rio do Peixe Group (Rio do Peixe Basin) stands out for the quantity and quality of preservation of tracks. In this work we report a new ichnosite in the Sousa Formation (Berriasian-Hauterivian), of the Rio do Peixe Group, found in the municipality of São João do Rio do Peixe, Paraíba state, north-east Brazil. The site has a well-preserved track of a large sauropod dinosaur, with manus and pes impressions, as well as tracks of theropod dinosaurs, indeterminate tridactyls and a possible isolated set of manus and pes of a smaller sauropod. The tracks and footprints were measured, and photogrammetry of the main sauropod track was carried out to generate a 3D model and depth analysis. The main sauropod track was associated with Parabrontopodus isp. due to the absence of an internal distance between the footprints, as well as other characteristics. The identity of the trackmaker and its implications for knowledge of the diversity of sauropods from the Rio do Peixe Basin, as well as the evolution of Titanosauriformes morphology during the early Cretaceous are discussed.
