SUMMARY:

Terrain modeling, feature extraction, and automated classification are being applied in the subsurface to understand the forces that shape the seafloor. However, marine geomorphometry still requires further scientific effort due to the dynamic nature of the marine environment and the challenges of data acquisition. A geomorphometric analysis of the Jequitinhonha basin in northeastern Brazil was performed using satellite, nautical chart, and multibeam bathymetry data. The results obtained allowed the identification of new geomorphic features in this portion of the continental shelf, including six submarine canyon heads, a new direction of erosion of Belmonte Canyon on the continental shelf, a new unfilled incised valley, and paleochannels. Coral reefs, a paleo-spit, and a paleo-lagoon were also mapped. The positions and orientations of these paleodraineges systems indicate a significant change in fluvial flows in the narrow continental shelf of this region, transporting large amounts of sediments to the abyssal zone. This study highlights the importance of marine geomorphometry in identifying potential hazards to navigation and exploring natural resources. It also emphasizes the need for continued research to improve our understanding of the seafloor's morphology and the dynamic nature of the marine environment.
