SUMMARY:

The Cretaceous stands out as a geological period with great scientific and economic significance in different sedimentary basins around world. However, there are still regions where the knowledge is unsatisfactory in fundamental themes, such as the paleoenvironmental reconstruction and the understanding of the tectonic and stratigraphic framework of the Cretaceous basins. This work explores the characterization, from the tectonic- structural point of view, of the sequences that fill the Grajaú Basin, in the light of sequence stratigraphy and its relationship with the evolutionary stages of the Equatorial Margin sedimentary basins. Emphasis is given to the analysis of the Grajaú and Codó formations, as well as the Itapecuru Group. This study aims to propose paleoenvironmental reconstructions that can contribute to the depositional models already presented for this basin, besides characterizing structures that affected or controlled deposition and the regional context of these tectonic events. During the second semester of 2019, two fieldworks trips were carried out, totalizing 30 days. A total of 280 outcrops distributed along the State of Maranhão and the northeastern portion of the State of Pará, were studied. This work presents a sedimentological and stratigraphic characterization of 26 important outcrops studied in this basin. Two tables with facies descriptions are presented, as defined by Cunha et al. (2019). Sequence A comprises the facies equivalent to the deposits of the Codó and Grajaú formations, while Sequence B contains the facies corresponding to the deposits of the Itapecuru Group. For these characterizations, a broad bibliographical survey was realized in relation to the description and association of sedimentary facies for the studied deposits. This initial stage of work is fundamental for the recognition of the strata, as a premise and input for the next stages that will be accomplished.
