TITLE:

INFLUENCE OF FRACTURE ZONES ON TRANSFORM MARGIN: INSIGHTS FROM THE BARRERINHAS BASIN

KEY WORDS:

Barreirinhas Basin; Transform Tectonic; Brazilian Equatorial Margin; Romanche Fracture Zone

PAGES: 28
BIG AREA: Ciências Exatas e da Terra
AREA: Geociências
SUMMARY:

The Barreirinhas Basin is in the Brazilian Equatorial Margin, formed during the opening of the Equatorial Atlantic in the Lower Cretaceous. Its origin was relatated to the transforming movement portrayed by shearing stresses, which was responsible for the separation of the supercontinent Pangea during the Albian, along the Romanche Fracture Zone. Although the initial exploratory failures were not satisfactory, consequently leading to the stigmatization of the Barreirinhas Basin, that have long promoted the stigmatization of the Barreirinhas Basin, the news discoveries of importante hydrocarbon reserves on the conjugated margins of Africa (Jubileu and Tweneboa fields) and in French Guiana (field Zaedyus) has been boosting recent studies in the area. This study aims is propose a structural framework, which represents the faithful way in which the structuring of the basement and the sedimentary filling of the Barreirinhas Basin that was influenced by the Romanche Fracture Zone. For this, a joint interpretation of 2D seismic, geophysical well profiles and gravimetric data was carried out. The interpretation of seismic data allowed the delimitation, according to the tectonic regimes in force, of three main domains. The first of them, the continental domain, exhibits a dominantly distensional regime, with the deposition of a thick rift package. The transitional domain, exalts the strong influence of shearing efforts generated by the transforming movement along the Romanche Fracture Zone, affects characteristic seismic features: flower structures and limestone faults with expressive tailings from the basement rocks. However, inserted after the break of the slope, the oceanic domain resumes a low intensity tectonic regime, with predominantly thermal subsidence, portrayed by a thick Drift megasequence, while the Rift megasequence presents little expression in this region.
