RESUMO:

The coastal zone is a dynamic and transitional environments, where continuous changes at different temporal and spatial scales, from seconds to millennia, related to several factors (e.g. oceanographic processes, winds, fluvial, climate, geotectonic, anthropogenic). Continuous monitoring of this environment can help to understand the spatial distribution of erosion, predicting its development and facilitating to create solutions. Therefore, the primary objective of this dissertation is to investigate the behavior of the coastline and its climatic and hydrographic forcing in the regions near the Parnaiba delta during the period from 1984 to 2017, through the acquisition and digital processing of satellite images. The study area was divided into four sectors (I, II, III and IV), in which statistical procedures of the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS), such as Weighted Linear Regression (WRL), End Point Rate (EPR) and R-squared (WR²) were used, which allowed to determine the rates of retreat and / or advancement of the coastline during the last thirty-three (33) years. From the WRL’s values it was possible to categorize the study sectors into five (5) classes: intense erosion, moderate erosion, stable area, moderate accretion and intense accretion. Results obtained showed that 21% of the beaches are under intense erosion, 30% under moderate erosion, 4% are relative stable, 29% under moderate accretion and 15%under intense accretion. The sector IV presented the highest erosion, while sector II had a higher accretion of sediments. During the years from 1995 to 1999, which correspond to the El Niño period, with the exception of Coqueiro beach, all the others were under intense erosion. One of the possible reasons would be the drastic reduction of the rainfall and the flow of the Parnaíba delta, together with the average increase of the speed of the winds, mainly during the months of June to December. The opposite occurs during the years of 2007 to 2009, considered as periods La Niña.
