RESUMO:

Studies on the Brazilian continental shelf are gradually developing, mainly in Northeast Brazil and in particular in Rio Grande do Norte State, where a current of a carbonate sedimentation is occurring. However, for many years the study of foraminifera as bioindicators serves as a tool for geology in order to fill gaps that other geological tools have not filled, such as ocean productivity, inferring marine currents and nutrient inputs, essential for the health and shelf dynamics. Aiming to contribute to fill this gap by adding sedimentary data and such protists as tools, this paper had as objective to gather the interpretation of the Brazilian sedimentary shelf cover adjacent to its equatorial external portion of the RN, correlating them with the assemblies of foraminifera, to understand the distribution of nutrients and carbonate production, important in the formation of geo-habitats, such as reefs. The methodology adopted consisted of the integration of abiotic and biotic data, both in quantitative and qualitative values through statistical data, and remote sensor products stored in georeferenced databases for a better visual understanding of the results. Six main sedimentological facies were mapped along the equatorial external platform of Rio Grande do Norte, close to its break to the slope, in the stretch between the Apodi-Mossoró and Piranhas-Açu valleys. The siliciclastic facies occur as relict sediments along the shelf, remnants of a previous pleistocene sedimentation, where dominance of individuals of the same species of foraminifera occurs. In the portions where the carbonic content increases, it is associated with the greater diversity of individuals of different species. The faciology of the sedimentary cover added to the distribution of the foraminifera, were one of the important parameters for the understanding of the dynamics and the shelf ecosystem, in which the foraminifera species are correlated. Except for the presence of Buccella peruviana, an important bioindicator of phenomena of marine resurgence, which is not related to the sedimentological characteristics mentioned above, but to the intrusion of cold waters and nutrients, important for the quality of the shelf environmental.
