A special Frequency Spectrum Expansion processing for the identification of gas chimneys was applied to seismic lines in the Parnaíba Basin. An abundance of gas chimneys have been found that are being studied and becoming a powerful exploratory tool mainly for frontier basins that possess them. Gas chimneys are vertical and low frequency chaotic disturbances present in the seismic data, which are interpreted as being due to the migration of fluids or free gas. Standard seismic processing does not favor the recognition of gas chimneys , since its characteristic seismic signature is treated as noise and the low frequencies are strongly attenuated already during the seismic acquisition period. In order to recover this seismic data content, the new processing flow calculates the complex seismic trace and, in the Hilbert Domain, extrapolates to the harmonic and sub-harmonic frequencies of the frequency spectrum of the measured seismic signal. The set of reflections, thus calculated, highlights the low frequencies of the seismic signal, making the gas chimneys quite visible where previously they were not even perceived. The new methodology applied in the seismic lines of the Parnaíba Basin was therefore able to safely characterize the gas chimneys, reduce the exploratory risks through its study and even strongly suggest the existence of a new petroleum system associated with pre-silurian deposits present in the basin grabens. The gas chimneys could also be validated by the observation of seismic and topographic features. An assembly of examples of the seismic expression of the gas chimneys revealed through this methodology was made and an association of its origin with the regional faults such as the Transbrasilian Line (LTB) was made. Also models were developed and a table was created for the classification of the exploratory plays associated with the gas chimneys according to their probabilities of success. All this studies points in the direction of a high potential for discoveries, in terms of hydrocarbon research, in this basin considered as an exploratory frontier.
