RESUMO:

More than 50% of the world's oil and natural gas are contained in fractured-karstified carbonate reservoirs, including several supergiant fields such as the Ghawar (Saudi Arabia), Kashagan and Tengiz (Kazakhstan), and the great discoveries of the Brazilian Pre-Salt. The hydrocarbon production in this type of reservoir presents great challenges and uncertainties, since the quality of the reservoir can be very variable according to the tectono-sedimentary and diagenetic evolution. The prediction of sub-seismic structures in carbonate reservoirs is a fundamental technological gap for flow models. Karst features are responsible for much of the porosity in carbonate units, but are rarely observed on a seismic or well scale. The present study investigates the occurrence of karst on the anticlinal hinge zone formed during the last pliocene-recent stress field in the region of the Apodi-Mossoró river valley, between the municipalities of Felipe Guerra and Governador Dix-Sept Rosado. The aim of this study is to understand the geological controls on the permo-porosity distribution in the fractured and karstified carbonates of the Jandaíra Formation, Potiguar Basin. Remote sensing products (satellite and drone images, aerial photographs associated with the digital terrain model), 2D seismic data, exploratory wells logs and field data were integrated. The region of the Apodi-Mossoró River Valley presents the largest and most spectacular occurrence of karst features of the State of Rio Grande do Norte, where carbonate exposures occur in the form of ledge, caves, dolines, walls in the road, river or quarries and are exceptionally rich in geological details, presenting a great structural, stratigraphic, sedimentary and diagenetic complexity. The Apodì river lies in a karstic valley formed by the collapse of galleries and cave halls, being elongated with vertical slopes. Through the regional and local analysis of the geological and geophysical data, a regional-scale fold with NE-SW axis plunging to NE was identified and mapped, consistently with the current drainage of the Apodi-Mossoró River, and compatible with the current stress field (NW-SE compression). Field data and structural analysis made it possible to relate the karstification of the carbonates in the fold hinge zone, where fracture intensity is higher than fold limbs. Far from the influence of the fold, the karstic effect is basically superficial. The present study can be used for first order prediction of karst in carbonate units and the consequent increase of permo-porosity in carbonate reservoirs.
