SUMMARY:

The Serra do Martins Formation (FSM) is a geological unit located in the northeastern region of Brazil, between the states of Rio Grande do Norte and Paraíba. This formation consists of sediments such as continental sandstones, conglomerates, and lateritic facies, found on plateaus that crown the Borborema Plateau and residual massifs of the Sertaneja Surface. Due to its topographic position and remarkable distribution, the FSM is considered an important testimony to the geomorphological evolution of the region, but its age and evolution have been subject to controversy. Studies indicate that the FSM originated from an ancient agradational surface that underwent topographic inversion. The lack of precise chronological markers has made it difficult to determine the age of the FSM and its correlation with known geotectonic events. The most accepted hypothesis is that the FSM was deposited between the Paleocene and Oligocene, predating the Barreiras Formation, and represents sediments related to post-Cretaceous regional planation surfaces, deposited on the continental crystalline basement. However, the extent and spatial distribution of the remnants of the FSM are still not fully understood, leading to uncertainties about the paleogeography of the sedimentation environment. Additionally, the transition from an agradational to an erosive environment in the FSM is associated with intraplate tectonic activity, the extent, nature, and pattern of deformation of which are still debated. Likewise, the state of the art lacks studies on the modeling and pedogenetic processes of these reliefs in the face of Cenozoic climatic changes in northeastern Brazil, in order to understand their morphopedological evolution. In this sense, this doctoral research aims to understand the geomorphological evolution of the reliefs covered by the Serra do Martins Formation, in order to place it in the Cenozoic geomorphological history of northeastern Brazil. To achieve this, an extensive bibliographic and cartographic survey related to the study object is carried out, along with detailed peneplain mapping methods, geospatial analysis, faciological analysis, stratigraphic relationships, paleogeographic modeling, and graphic resources. It is understood that the text presented here only provides preliminary results, as it is a product presented for aQualifying Examination.
