SUMMARY:

This research focuses on Peripheral Geographic Thought, with Euclides's work as a reference for the analysis. After the independence of Brazil in 1822 emerged the need for a nationalist feeling that justified the idea of the new Nation-State, as well as responsible for developing elements that would configure a  certain Brazilianity. In this way, several intellectuals, entitled writers-citizens, take the responsibility of constituting an interpretation of the society and the territory formation, pointing out the national singularity. Among the several works and authors that stand out in the period, Euclides da Cunha's books Os Sertões and À Margem da História were responsible for generating a perspective of historical and geographical knowledge, which carried at its core a reading of Brazil, from its territory and its differentiations. At the same time, it is understood that these writings embody a knowledge centered on a significant spatial dimension. From these observations, we draw attention to the central question that guides this research: to what extent do the representations about the territory and population present in Euclides da Cunha's work constitute the genesis of a Brazilian geographical thought? Based on this leading question, the main objective is to analyze how the representations about the territory and the population were present in the constitution of the genesis of Brazilian Geographical Thought, especially in Euclides da Cunha's work. This report is structured into four parts. The first is the introduction, which presents the ideas that underlie the research in addition to the grounding questions, objectives, and justifications. Subsequently, we have the literature review, containing the theoretical assumptions and concepts of geographic discourse, geographical representation, and the notion of Peripheral Brazilian Social Thought. In addition, a synthesis effort of the idea of Peripheral Geographical Thinking.  Next, we present the methodological path adopted, detailing the procedures that will support the construction of the analyses based on the Elements of Understanding. Finally, the next steps of the research are presented, highlighting the objectives of the upcoming chapters.
