SUMMARY:

Coastal wetlands are characterized as transition zones between terrestrial and aquatic environments, periodically flooded by fresh, brackish or saline water, of natural or artificial origin. Considering the importance of these ecosystems and the studies focused on the ecosystem services they provide, this work has as its study area the fluviomarine plain of the Piranhas-Açu River (RN), a landscape composed of a mosaic of wetlands, located on the Brazilian semi-arid northern coast . The region stands out for its physical-natural and socioeconomic particularities, whose ecosystems are responsible for providing various services in favor of human well-being. However, the replacement of natural ecosystems by artificial ecosystems (trade-offs) is progressively affecting nature's ecosystem functions. In this sense, some concerns arise in relation to the interdependence between the community and the services provided by the estuarine system – specifically those of provision –, from which we seek to understand how these are modified through the insertion of new ecosystems to the detriment of others, whose analysis extends from the ecotone areas to the trade-offs of the studied environment. In this way, the general objective of the research is to evaluate the areas of ecotones and the trade-offs against the provision of ecosystem services provided by the coastal wetlands (macrohabitats) of the fluviomarine stretch in the estuarine system of the Piranhas-Açu River (RN/NE – Brazil). ). The report presents theoretical reflections on the topic addressed (Chapter 1), physical and socioeconomic characterization of the area (Chapter 2), classification of coastal wetlands (Chapter 3), as well as the next steps that will be taken for the conclusion of the thesis, in which all methodological steps are understood.
