SUMMARY:

The present research in development analyzes the importance of territory and identity for the Remaining Quilombola Senhor do Bonfim Community, located in the rural area of the municipality of Areia, state of Paraíba. The process of self-recognition of the aforementioned Community was marked by struggles and resistance, with memory being a strategy for  the re-elaboration of identity, in the face of conflicts and threats suffered and faced by that social group. In this sense, the main question of the study concerns how the process of self-recognition of the aforementioned Community took place. To develop the research, theoretical and methodological paths were followed , such as: regarding the construction of identity, Stuart Hall (2006), Tomaz Tadeu da Silva (2000) will help in the perception of how it is manufactured from differences and according to the lived context; with reflections on memory we will guide ourselves with Maurice Halbwachs (2003) so that we can understand how individual memory is linked to a collective memory, Pollak, (1992) individual memory is linked to a collective memory. The concept linked to the territory of Rogério Haesbaert (2004, 2007) will be extremely important for our analysis and especially for the contributions in the constitution of identity. In addition, we use the concept of territoriality by authors Raffestin (1993) and Saquet (2007), territoriality involves the dynamic processes of all human instances reflected in the daily life of the territory. The theoretical framework adopted highlights issues related to identity, memory and the categories used for territory and territoriality. Quilombos are seen as symbols and sources of resistance, identity, culture, examples of dignity, struggle and perseverance.The results presented reveal the importance that identity has for the group and for the formation of the territory and the conquest of rights.
