SUMMARY:

We studied the nexuses of the circuits of the urban economy in the sale and delivery of food demanded by applications in the city of Natal (RN), considering the context of the Covid-19 pandemic as an event that affected the socio-spatial framework, particularly the functioning of the economy and the development of employment, and which imposed new dynamics on the territory, among them the intensification of the use of delivery applications. Faced with a slowdown in economic activities and the need to reduce the movement of people in space, a significant portion of the population lost their jobs and began to find in food delivery apps an alternative to obtain a source of income. For the various commercial establishments, especially those in the food industry, these applications ensured the circulation of their goods in the city, made it possible for their sales to remain and, therefore, the supply of the urban population in the face of a scenario of social isolation. However, despite the importance that these apps have acquired in recent years, the expansion of private app delivery companies signals a new stage in the precariousness of work, uberization. Its expansion reveals different uses of the territory by the hegemonic and non-hegemonic agents of the economy, and highlights new links between the circuits of the urban economy based on the uses of the dominant key roads of that period (technics, information, consumption and finance). In the research that follows, we propose to think of private delivery companies through apps, such as iFood, 99Food, Rappi and others, as hegemonic agents that integrate the upper circuit of the urban economy because they have in their activities a high degree of capitalization, technology and bureaucratic organization. Likewise, we consider couriers as agents that belong to the lower circuit of the economy due to the intensive use of labour, low level of capitalization and unsophisticated organization of their activities. Commercial establishments that offer their products through these apps, in turn, constitute both the upper and lower circuits, given that they are differentiated by the degree of capitalization, organization and technology present in their operation. It is from these different agents involved in the sale and delivery of food through apps that it becomes possible to observe a deepening, especially in the context of the pandemic, of the relationship of dependency, complementarity and subordination that exist between the circuits of the urban economy. In this sense, we aim to analyze the nexuses of the circuits of the urban economy in the sale and delivery of food demanded by applications in the city of Natal, in the Covid-19 pandemic, considering the uses of the territory by hegemonic and non-hegemonic agents of the economy, the importance of technical-scientific-informational means for the socioeconomic dynamics in the midst of a pandemic and the precariousness of work in this context. The methodology used is based on the following procedures: literature review; survey of statistical data and cartographic production; documentary research; interviews and application of questionnaires with delivery people and owners of commercial establishments. As a spatial clipping of our research, we delimited some centralities of the city of Natal because they have a wide variety of commercial establishments with different degrees of capitalization and organization, in addition to concentrating delivery workers.
