SUMMARY:

This research is focused on the book O abolicionismo (1883), by the Brazilian northeastern writer and politician Joaquim Nabuco. In this work, the author makes important contributions to the construction of the Brazilian nation by describing the way in which social and economic relations, both having been rooted in slavery, shaped the Brazilian national territory. When tracing analyses in his writings, the Pernambuco writer devoted some special attention to the process of occupation of the Brazilian space, economic production, and the slave worker. Substantially, the composition of the internal and external scenario of O abolicionismo occurred, concomitantly, with the absence of institutionalized social sciences in Brazil, including Geography. This condition provided Literature the task of narrating, describing, and interpreting the country's reality, whose records resulted in a set of documents that enabled the construction of geographic discourses, shaped by the principle of nationality. Based on this perspective, we reconcile these initial observations to highlight the central question of this research: What are the main geographical contributions of O abolicionismo, by Joaquim Nabuco, to the interpretation of the territorial formation of Brazil? In order to achieve satisfactory results, we set, as the main goal, the analysis of the geographical contributions of Nabuco’s work to the understanding of the Brazilian territorial formation. For this reason, and as a result of this stage of the research, we have structured a theoretical debate centered on both the concepts of discourse and geographic discourse, which is a practice that strategically assumes the power to ideologically influence the people in the conformation of the nation and a collective identity. Subsequently, we point to a reflection upon the role of social thought and Brazilian Literature, through the interpretation of the concept of “races” and the representative construction of people and territory. Furthermore, as a constructive process of the research, we present the methodological procedure used, drawing attention to the bibliographic and documental research carried out. In this process, we also emphasize the analysis that will be made based on O abolicionismo, through the interpretative path of the elements of understanding. As a result of this path, it is expected the composition of two more chapters: one dedicated to understanding the work and the author, highlighting the articulated system of knowledge, through the values and ideologies that underlie the philosophical and scientific perspective of this book, as well as the time and spatial designation that conferred the forms of manifestation of society and the territorial organization; the other one, centered on the critical analysis of the book, emphasizing the geographic discourse present in O abolicionismo.
