SUMMARY:

A concrete relationship links the city dweller to the city as a material and human construction, which becomes immaterial when worshipped. For topophilia (affection) and topophobia (disaffection) as structuring of this dynamic, the city is being redefined and the understanding of the lived space and the experiences that sustain it is being delineated. In this process, a city full of affections and meanings is instituted, as an anchorage for multiple experiences: the geosymbolic city. Towards the epistemology of a Geography of Symbolic Forms, this idea of the city is seen as an experience of lived space, which is much more than forms outlined by erected concrete and by the dynamics of nature: it contains human affection! From this perspective, the present thesis studies the city of Natal – Rio Grande do Norte (Brazil), considering its affectations on the dynamics of the lived space. To do so, it highlights the city's geosymbols – or more commonly the monuments, as a way of accessing the city's affection. In the cultural dimension of the constitution of the city, geosymbols are geographical forms susceptible to connote values and feelings, which significantly influence the process of construction of the liveable, the sayable and the visible in the discursive matrix of Natal. From a phenomenological perspective, understanding how this city affects those who live in it becomes the main objective of this thesis. To achieve it, among the procedures and techniques that validate academic work, it was necessary: 1) bibliographic research; 2) documentary research from primary and secondary sources; 3) field research; and, 4) research in geocyberspace, using the social network Facebook as a data collection platform, for the study of topophobia and topophilia in graphical representations by emojis. These representations engender ways of seeing, saying and living the city mediated by images in contemporary contexts, in which Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have engendered different types of socio-spatial relationships. In this order, the geosymbolic city emerges as a result of image-discourses around it and its natural and social geosymbols, in relation to which city dwellers develop feelings, create bonds of affection or dislike them, giving them the priority of providing happiness or sadness. For this perspective, the city is more a substantial, affective space than a delimited geographic cut. In this dynamic, the city's vitality is revealed in the experiences and in the way it affects the citizen.
