SUMMARY:

In the phase in which America occupied a central role for the mercantilist development and constitution of the contemporary world system, a social formation linked to the monoculture of sugarcane was constituted in a certain portion of the Northeast region, Brazil. As a research problem, the thesis reflects on the territorial cut of the largest sugarcane production in the states of Pernambuco and Alagoas and aims to analyze its social formation, considering it as an element related to the performance of the Brazilian State and its direct and indirect intervention on the activity of the throughout history. As specific objectives, the aim is to examine the development of sugarcane activity in the region over time; recognize in the sugar-alcohol economy the intervention of the Brazilian State since its installation to the present day; discuss cultural-ideological aspects of the performance of economic and political agents linked to the sugarcane agroindustry; and spatially identify transformations and permanencies in the regional geographic space. In methodological terms, it starts with documental research for a historical survey of quantitative data related to the production of sugarcane and the role of the Brazilian State in the sugarcane economy; bibliographical research to recognize the cultural-ideological basis of the action of political and economic agents; and field research for spatial identification of transformations and permanencies in geographic space. As a hypothesis, it is considered that the sugarcane productive region of the states of Pernambuco and Alagoas is the result of the Brazilian state action in the sugarcane economy, having its genesis linked more to national policy than to the economy. Theoretically, the study is guided by the concept of Social Formation, applying it to the understanding of a subspace inserted in its entirety. As an empirical dimension, the sugarcane region that extends from the extreme north of Pernambuco to the extreme south of Alagoas is defined as a subspace. By valuing the material dimension of geographic space, the research considers the materialist-based dialectic to be valid for its recognition of the hegemony of matter over ideas and for being related to one of the dear precepts of geographic analysis proposed by Milton Santos, the totality, and with the very concept of Social Formation due to its totalizing nature.
