SUMMARY:

Since the beginning of the 20th century, Brazilian metropolitan growth has generated environmental impacts and urban problems mainly linked to the inadequate use of land. Therefore, growth processes are not accompanied by adequate urban planning, generating a wide range of environmental impacts. The study of land use and land cover and its dynamics is an essential theme for environmental and teritorial planning, by portraying human and social activities that impact the environment. .In this sense, the modern techniques of temporal analysis and spatial dynamic modeling allow the monitoring of spatial changes in the landscape and the prediction of its behavior in the future. This research seeks to make a diagnosis of land use and land cover changes for the years 1984 to 2018 of the Metropolitan Region of Natal and a prognosis for the years 2030, 2040 and 2050. Landsat data were used for the years 1984, 1992, 2000, 2010 and 2018 to list land use and land cover maps in a geographical information system (GIS) environment. Future scene change and modeling will also be made for the years 2030, 2040 and 2050, using GIS. Partial results show that there was a reduction in vegetation cover 898.01 km² (-41.3%), pasture is approximately 32% of the mapped area, occupying a total area of 1,151 km². The Inactive Dunes had a reduction of 15% between 2000 - 2018. Natal and Parnamirim in 2010 its population is totally urban. The municipalities that had an increase greater than 50% of the rural population in the period 1992 - 2010 in the NMR, were: Monte Alegre and Vera Cruz both with 56% and Maxaranguape with 63%.
