SUMMARY:

The study of the landscape in semiarid environments, even though it has been the target of several studies, still lacks better approaches, especially those related to environmental issues and territorial planning. In this way, one of the forms of representation and characterization of the landscape occurs through a geomorphological approach, as for example the morphopedological compartmentalization capable of creating homogeneous zonings to define usage criteria, fragilities and environmental potentialities. This research, which is being developed, has the general objective of identifying and characterizing relief compartments present in the Rio Espinharas Basin (BHRE) in the semi-arid region of Paraíba, Brazil and reflecting on its environmental weaknesses and potentialities. As for the specific objectives, there are: 1) Set up a BHRE physical-spatial database according to the rules of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (INDE); 2) Identify the relief compartments in BHRE using a cartographic methodology based on Cavalcanti's ideas (2013); Castro and Salomão (2000); 3) Analyze and reflect on the environmental strengths and weaknesses at BHRE with a focus on territorial management. To carry out this research, they have used Geoprocessing and digital image processing techniques as a method, in the light of the guidelines of Cavalcanti (2013) and Castro and Salomão (2000), in addition to using secondary data from IBGE and fieldwork. The partial results concern only the characterization of the variables of the physical environment, including morphometric variables such as declivity and hypsometry, geology, use and coverage of land, soil, climate and water resources. The work will continue from the review and corrections of the material produced until the qualification, refinement of the soil map and by the application of the morphopedological compartmentalization method.
