RESUMO:

Traditions, representations, myths and rites are elements that are present in the symbolic and cultural imagery of society. Particularly in regard to questions about death, men seek to connect with the deity to find grounds to guide the mystery of life (or death) and seek answers in the supernatural field for a number of reasons: not acceptance in its ephemeral materiality, namely the rupture between earthly existence and transcendent dimensions; whether they seek the understanding of life on earth, given their existential imperfection or the creation of the external world, which make them narrow in the face of the greatness of the universe, irrational from the human point of view; or by the balm offered in the belief in a higher being that governs humanity and determines the events that flee from human logicity. Faced with the need to understand these phenomena inherent to life, this work aims to discuss the elements that represent cultural and religious manifestations from the funeral grounds in Serrolândia-BA, a city composed of three cemeteries. In addition, we present discussions that involve religious territoriality, which took place from the construction of an exclusive cemetery for the burial of Protestants, willing to segregate the bodies of believers who, in life, possessed opposing doctrinal beliefs. From the knowledge of the symbolic representations in the cemeteral space, a reference to life is perceived, that is, to understand the different languages contained in these environments, demonstrates the concern that the entities operate in front of the eyes of the living, since the cultural representations present in the necropolises reflect the interpretation and ways of living that certain individuals have about death. Thus, it is sought to draw a link between the world of the living and the world of the dead in order to understand and present the contextual elements of the tomb constitutions, their symbolic and material components, cultural expressions and funereal rites, with the aim to demonstrate the specific characteristics of death as a manifestation of the beliefs, identities and values that make up society.
