RESUMO:

The present work aims to valuation the ecosystem services of the Parque Estadual Dunas do Natal Jornalista Luiz Maria Alves, better known as Parque das Dunas, located in the municipality of Natal, in the eastern part of the state of Rio Grande do Norte. It was the first Environmental Conservation Unit implanted in this state, having been conceived in 1977, through the State Decree nº 7.237 / 77. It is an integral part of the Atlantic Forest biosphere reserve recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and, therefore, declared an Environmental Patrimony of Humanity. The park offers various educational, recreational, physical and cultural activities, as well as the possibility of carrying out studies, researches and works of scientific interest. The park also contributes to the maintenance of air quality, recharge of the aquifer, among other benefits that can be enjoyed by the whole society. Ecosystem Services can be defined, in a general way, as the benefits (material or immaterial) obtained by man through nature. Human well-being, therefore, is closely related to the availability in quantity and quality of ecosystem services. Such services are the basis or support of life and human well-being, providing assets (food, water, fiber, energy), services (air cleaning, water regulation, climate regulation) and ideas. The valuation of ecosystem services, in turn, can be seen as a relevant instrument to demystify the erroneous impression that a preserved area would be an idle area. Besides that, it provides subsidies for environmental policies and increases the efficiency of environmental management. The economic valuation methods seek to estimate a value for the environmental resource different from the conventional monetary form, since these resources are not priced in the financial market. There is no money or technology capable of replacing the environmental services provided by biodiversity, climate regulation, hydrological cycle, ozone layer protection and so many others. Thus, the importance of environmental valuation methods stems not only from the need to measure environmental impacts, internalizing them to the economy, but also from showing costs and benefits resulting from the expansion of human activity. The valuation of ecosystem services will be done through consultations with the population through the application of questionnaires, which will aim to unveil, through the valuation methods applied the individual preferences of the interviewees, and, thus, reach their Willingness to Pay (DAP), for the maintenance of the environmental good, which, in this study, refers to the ecosystem services provided by Parque das Dunas.
